As the demand for electric vehicles continues to grow, it is well-known that any company would have to bring an electric model to market in order to sustain its business. Last year, several companies launched electric models in the Indian market. However, Maruti Suzuki is going to bring an electric car to participate in that race. According to online reports, it is a small electric SUV, code-named YY8.
As always, Maruti Suzuki is going to bring the YY8 electric car considering the middle-class people of the country. It will compete with the upcoming Tata Punch EV. Meanwhile, in late 2016, an electric prototype model of the Suzuki WagonR was seen being tested. However, the company has not been able to launch a single electric model car so far.
The company has stated that they are going to bring affordable models of electric cars. They are even planning to bring such a car in the middle of this decade. In addition, Maruti Suzuki has teamed up to bring more environmentally friendly (CNG) powered models of vehicles in the future to reduce environmental pollution. It is speculated that the company may launch the YY8 Micro SUV in 2024.
According to sources, electric SUVs will be manufactured jointly with Toyota at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat manufacturing facility. The price of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki YY8 could be around Rs 10 lakh.

Tata Motors, on the other hand, has already launched electric versions of Nexon and Tigor in the Indian market. Tata is committed to maintaining the momentum of progress in this area through huge investments under a new subsidiary. Tata may come up with a more range Nexon EV this year. Besides, the local company is making more than one electric car for the middle class of the country. In 1-2 years, Tata may come up with an electric version of Tiago, Punch and Altro.
